Combatting Antisemitism: ZOA’s Center for Law and Justice

In the modern era, antisemitism has taken on new and insidious forms, often masking itself as political criticism of the State of Israel. Recognizing this trend, the Zionist Organization of America established the ZOA Center for Law and Justice (CLJ). This specialized division is dedicated to protecting the rights of Jewish people through legal action and policy advocacy. By utilizing federal and state laws, the CLJ has become a critical shield against discrimination, particularly in academic and institutional settings where traditional forms of advocacy may fall short.

One of the most significant achievements of the CLJ has been its pioneering work with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The ZOA was one of the first organizations to argue that Title VI, which prohibits discrimination based on race, color, or national origin in federally funded programs, should also protect Jewish students. For years, the CLJ fought to ensure that the Department of Education would recognize that harassment rooted in anti-Jewish bias falls under the jurisdiction of the law. This advocacy eventually led to a landmark shift in policy, providing Jewish students with a powerful legal tool to combat hostile environments on campus.

The CLJ’s work is not limited to campus issues. It also engages in litigation and legal advocacy regarding the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement. The ZOA views BDS as a form of economic warfare that targets Israel and its supporters based on discriminatory criteria. By supporting anti-BDS legislation and challenging discriminatory practices in court, the CLJ works to ensure that the legal system upholds the principle of fairness. Whether it is responding to discriminatory hiring practices or challenging biased curricula in public schools, the Center remains vigilant in its pursuit of justice.

By combining deep legal expertise with a passionate commitment to Zionist principles, the Center for Law and Justice provides a unique service to the Jewish community. It moves the fight against antisemitism from the realm of opinion into the realm of legal precedent. This approach ensures that those who seek to harass or marginalize Jewish people are held accountable under the law. As the ZOA continues its work, the CLJ stands as a testament to the idea that the “Rule of Law” is one of the most effective weapons in the struggle for human rights and communal safety.
